5 - ATOMS, MOLECULES AND CRYSTALLINE LATTICES
Pure substances can be either simple substances or compounds. The way their atoms are arranged depend on their atoms' valence shell.
SIMPLE SUBSTANCES: They consist of atoms of only one element. How can we find them in Nature? There are three possible structures:
1) ISOLATED ATOMS-
2) CRYSTALLINE LATTICES- they can be either covalent crystalline lattices or metallic crystalline lattices.
METALLIC CRYSTALLINE LATTICE- iron (BCC structure)
3) MOLECULES - a group of atoms of the same element connected by covalent bonds.
COMPOUNDS: They consist of atoms of more than one element. They can be found in two different structures:
1) MOLECULES- A molecule is a group of atoms connected by covalent bonds.
2) CRYSTALLINE LATTICES-
