Only the noble gases exist as individual atoms not bonded to other atoms. In all other substances atoms are held together by chemical bonds, either sharing or gaining/losing electrons. 

In doing so, these atoms develop some kind of attraction, or bonding, between them (they are held together by bonds). The three main types of bonding are ionic bonding, covalent bonding and metallic bonding.
