Scientific notation is just a short hand way of expressing gigantic numbers like 1,300,000 or incredibly small numbers like 0.0000000000045. It is also known as exponential form.
The picture shows some examples of numbers written in scientific notation.
Express the following measurements in scientific notation:
The distance from the center of the Earth to a point on or near its surface (Earth's radius) is approximately 6378 000 m.
Most common bacteria are about 0.00001 m long.
A single red blood cell is about 0.000007 m in diameter.
Pollen grains cause allergies in many people, but they usually are too small to see. A grain of ragweed pollen, for example, is only 0.00002 m in diameter.
The average population of Spain is 47 000 000 people.
