8 - Systematic errors

Systematic errors in experimental observations usually are those that can be avoided or taken into account. They may occur because:

a) there is something wrong with the instrument or its data handling system. Example: zero setting error (error de cero)

b) because the instrument is wrongly used by the observer. Example: parallax error (error de paralaje)

ZERO SETTING ERROR

This error happens when the instrument does not read zero when the quantity to be measured is zero.

(Este error se comete cuando el dispositivo de medida no tiene inicialmente la aguja (si es analógico) en el cero, sino desplazado ligeramente a la derecha o a la izquierda. Por tanto, la lectura hecha indica un valor mayor (en el primer caso) y menor (en el segundo caso) que el correcto.)

PARALLAX ERROR

Place your eye at the level of the lower part of the curved surface o f the liquid - the meniscus- to avoid parallax error.

(Para determinar el volumen de agua contenido en la probeta sin cometer error de paralaje debemos colocar nuestra línea de visión perpendicular al plano de la probeta a la altura del vértice del menisco)
